Strength Training Beyond Convention

Why not just go to a box gym and do a bodybuilding split?

After all, you’ll be fit, healthier, you’ll look good, and you’ll feel better. It’s a good investment. It’s just a little boring.

What if you could have all these things PLUS fitness adaptations relevant to a physical discipline that inspires you? Wouldn’t it be better to obtain strength useful to your own self expression?

Additionally, what if you could have all these things and real strength. Not the like, somewhat OK strength that comes from lifting ergonomically-shaped implements that conform perfectly to your hands and fingers. We’re talking strength that allows you to produce enormous amounts of force through and from the body parts you actually use to interface with real world objects, namely, your hands and feet.

Wouldn’t it be cool to be capable of picking up a 60lb rock with an open hand grip? What about vertically hoisting your bodyweight while holding onto a ten millimeter thick ledge on your fingertips? Do you think it would be useful for you to squat your bodyweight through the ball of only one of your feet? You’d need VERY strong fingers and toes to do these things, and you won’t get that in an ordinary barbell gym.

It’s great to be able to deadlift 500lbs or squat 405 or bench 315 or whatever the conventional exercise metric is that you’re shooting for. But you can do a lot better than this. Sure, the central muscles of the thighs, hips, trunk, and shoulder girdle will improve with these orthodox exercises, but the power of these muscle groups will be constrained by weak hands and fingers if all you’re gripping to move these loads is a 28mm diameter cylinder.

Conventional strength training is great for health and basic fitness. But if you want to be strong anywhere, moving loads shaped like anything, there are further frontiers to cross in strength training.
